Questions tagged [big-sur]

It is almost always preferable to use the macos tag and also list the exact version in questions (especially during beta season), but this tag may be helpful in questions that aren’t about macOS in general

macOS 11 Big Sur is Apple's seventeenth major release of the macOS operating system for Macintosh computers. macOS Big Sur was announced June 22nd, 2020 at WWDC. It first was released as a public beta on August 6, 2020 and then Apple released the final consumer version on November 12, 2020. Big Sur marks the end of version 10, which was introduced on March 24, 2001.

Usage Guidance

It is almost always preferable to use and just list the exact version in questions, but this tag may be helpful in questions that aren’t about macOS in general or are unlikely to be relevant in releases newer than Big Sur

Main changes

  • Refined user interface: reworked icons, menus, Notification Center, and Widgets; a Control Center like the one found in iOS was added and Apple has refined the system sounds, too.

  • Messages & Maps: Apple used Mac Catalyst to convert the iOS version of Messages and Maps to a version that runs on the Mac.

  • Safari 14: The Big Sur Safari has a new design and some build in feature like customizable start page, web page translation, new extension store, and Privacy Report that shows trackers on websites. Apple claims that the enhanced Safari is also 50% faster than Chrome and Firefox.

  • Photos & Notes also have been added some new features

System Requirements for macOS Big Sur

  • OS X 10.9 or later
  • 4GB of memory
  • 35.5GB available storage on macOS Sierra or later, up to 44.5GB of available storage if upgrading from an earlier release.

Devices supporting macOS Big Sur

  • MacBook: 2015 and later
  • MacBook Pro: Late 2013 and later
  • MacBook Air: 2013 and later
  • Mac Mini: 2014 and later
  • iMac: 2014 and later
  • iMac Pro: 2017 and later
  • Mac Pro: 2013 and later, with a Metal-capable GPU
