The Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) is a protocol which purpose is to facilitate the transfer of media files and associated metadata to/from devices. Many devices and audio software applications support MTP.

Latest versions of several operating systems, including AmigaOS, Android, AROS, Linux, Mac OS, and MorphOS, Symbian OS support MTP, sometimes with additional drivers or software.

Android exposes only parts of its file systems via MTP (usually the SD cards), but it does so in a transparent way: other than with (which was used up to Android 4.0), the storage remains accessible to apps even while mounted to your computer.
