Questions tagged [neutrinos]

Questions regarding a family of extremely low-mass, electrically neutral particles described in the Standard Model of particle physics.

Neutrinos are described in the Standard Model of particle physics. They are leptons, but carry no electric charge. The existence of neutrinos was first predicted to account for missing energy in neutron decay. Neutrinos are extremely low-mass, and there is an ongoing debate in the scientific community as to whether they have any mass at all. They were also notoriously publicized by the supposed "Faster-than-light" experiment by the OPERA team that was later shown to have incorrect results.

How Are Radioactive Decay Rates Influenced by Neutrinos - On Earth and Other Dense Planets

I read a science report recently that mentioned an accidental discovery where radioactive decay rates shifted slightly slower in advance ( about a day and a half) of solar storms or in sync with sun's 33-day pattern/rotation of the sun's core. Seems…

What object in the universe is most opaque to neutrinos?

I had this thought, and my first guess was "high density = lots of absorption, so I guess it's neutron stars" but this physics.se question about that has a great answer which covers why that's incorrect. So what object will absorb the highest…

Why do we have so few neutrinos to study?

According to Wikipedia most neutrinos passing through the Earth emanate from the Sun. About 65 billion (6.5^10) solar neutrinos per second pass through every square centimeter perpendicular to the direction of the Sun in the region of the…
