I recently discovered that a late friend of mine, who was a student of Bartel Leendert van der Waerden, was actually my mathematical great grandfather. This made van der Waerden my mathematical great great grandfather. I was amused but in the meantime also embarassed, as my knowledge in abstract algebra was (and still is, to be frank) so pedestrian.
