Classification

Many times, the middlegame is classified by the type of opening that starts the game. For example, a Sicilian middlegame is often dominated by opposite side castling and mutual attacks on the castled kings. A Ruy Lopez middlegame is often one where white tries to take advantage of a space edge and black tries to make use of the two bishops.
