Questions tagged [mining-hardware]

Mining hardware includes all equipment such as CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, and ASICs that can be used effectively to calculate hashes for mining Bitcoin. This also covers the production, and producers of such equipment.

Mining cryptocurrencies requires hardware to perform the Proof of Work calculation. These calculations can be done with a general purpose CPU. They can often be done with a GPU in order to obtain a higher hash rate. Some mining algorithms can be programmed into Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and even into hardware circuitry itself for more efficiency and a higher hash rate.

If bitcoin was created years earlier, would we see the same rate of mining hardware evolution?

It seems like there has been a steady progression from CPU mining, to GPU, FPGA, and now ASIC, and it all happened in a relatively small amount of time. If bitcoin was created in say, 2005 instead of 2009, and popularity grew at the same demand,…

Does the amount of memory in a GPU influences mining?

I am really new to this and am willing to give it a go. I've seen some rigs online and I would probably go for one, especially if I can upgrade the GPUs. So, I understand the heavy lifting is done by the GPU, so it's only fair to suppose a 256-bit…
