Wireless local area networking, also known as "Wireless Internet"; stands for "WIreless FIdelity"

Wi-Fi is a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance and is generally used to refer to the wireless local area networking standards which come under IEEE 802.11 (the most common being 802.11b/g/n). These three most common of the standards are the ones in mainstream use today; all of Apple's current lineup of products support the wireless-n (802.11n) protocol.

Apple used its trademarked term “AirPort” to refer to the wireless networking capabilities in its computers before the industry-wide Wi-Fi Alliance was formed and the term “Wi-Fi” was coined. However, since the release of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion in July 2011, Apple has ceased to refer to wireless networking capability in its computers and handheld devices as “AirPort connectivity” and has begun to use the industry term “Wi-Fi” instead.
