"Side loading" is shorthand for installing applications from places other than the official Google Play Store

"Side loading" is shorthand for installing applications from places other than the official Google Play Store. Such methods may be:

  • installing from an alternative Marketplace (e.g., Amazon App Store)
  • downloading an apk file from a website (such as directly from the developer) and installing

In either case, the "Unknown sources" setting must be turned on in order to side-load apps.
