Definition
A crash is a condition where a device or a program, either an application or part of the operating system, ceases to function properly, often exiting after encountering errors.
Often the offending program may appear to freeze or hang until a crash reporting service documents details of the crash.
If the program is a critical part of the operating system kernel, the entire device may crash. This is different from a hang or freeze where the application or OS continues to run without obvious response to input.
Force Close

When an application crashes, usually, you get a "Force close" message:
Force Close is an action, where you force the application to stop either due to a hang-up or freeze.
After forcing to close the application, you'll have to restart it.
Deliberately stop an application or service
Within you device, you have the ability to stop applications or services running, much like what the "force close" ends up doing:
Applications:
- Tap your device "menu" button;
- Tap "Settings";
- Tap "Applications";
- Tap "Manage applications";
- Tap over the application you wish to stop;
- From the applications details, if the application is being executed, you can use the button "Force stop" to have the system stopping it.
